synopsis A judge, who is on his way to a friend’s (Frank) funeral, meets a salesman. They soon realize that they are going to the same funeral. When they get off the train in a small village - the birthplace of both men – the salesman suggests a shortcut by way of a road through the fields, which triggers of memories of the past. They lose their way and miss the funeral. The judge recognizes Frank in the person of the salesman. Frank takes him to the spot of an unfinished knife-game they had begun in 1939. He wants to complete the game as he was close to winning it. It would be the first and only victory in his life. The judge, afraid of the circumstances, stabs Frank and buries his body.
