synopsis Slawomir Mrozek's play is set in the embassy of a western democracy located in the capitol of a totalitarian state (unmistakably the USSR), the play pits the representatives of the two governments and their two opposed philosophies against one another in an ideological duel that comes to center around a refugee who seeks political asylum in the building. The Ambassaor of the liberal regime that respects the rights of individuals discovers that his government no longer exists. The ruthless Deputy, who advocates the power of terror and hatred to build a better future for mankind, is willing to maintain the fiction that the democratic government is still a reality in order to have a hated enemy -- provided the Ambassador turns over the political refugee. The Ambassador decides to resist.
