play "Lalek"

original title Lalek
original language Polish
playwright Zbigniew Herbert
title of translation Lalek
translator Magdalena Czajkowska
synopsis A journalist arrives in a small provincial Polish town to report on the place. Shortly after his arrival, Lalek, a young local boy, is killed in a drunken brawl. The preparations for the funeral, as observed by the reporter, are a kind of lyrical threnody. It is a semi-poetic play for voices in which the author deliberately mixes literary genres. He presents the atmosphere of stagnant “provincialism” and condemns the cultural and moral void which is responsible for the emergence of crime.
